Nasdaq Includes Unit Investment Trusts In Its Mutual Fund Quotation Service

Date 05/02/2001

The Nasdaq Stock Market, Inc., today announced that the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has approved its proposal to include Unit Investment Trusts (UIT’s) in the Mutual Fund Quotation ServiceSM (MFQSSM). A Unit Investment Trust is a registered investment company that buys and holds a relatively fixed portfolio of stocks, bonds, or other securities. "Units" in the trust are sold to investors (unitholders) who receive a share of principal and interest or dividends. These trusts have a stated date for termination. When a trust is dissolved, the proceeds from the securities included in the trust are paid to unitholders.

Applications by UITs to list on the MFQS are now being accepted and processed by Nasdaq®, which would enable the UITs to disseminate data such as a trust’s Net Asset Value, ticker symbol, and name on Nasdaq Level One service, which carries real time quotation data for Nasdaq-listed securities to market data vendors. When applicable, other pricing data elements will also be available, including offer price, capital gains, and dividend distributions. UITs are priced only once a day and are not traded on an exchange.

Nasdaq will inform the public of impending UIT listings as well as changes to the MFQS UIT roster via the Mutual Fund Daily List page located on www.nasdaqtrader.com. Market Data vendors such as Reuters and Bridge are invited to process and distribute this important information and make the data available to subscribers. UIT Sponsor firms that are planning to list their trusts with Nasdaq MFQS include: Merrill Lynch, Prudential Securities, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, Ranson & Associates, Nike Securities, Salomon Smith Barney, Nuveen Investments and Van Kampen Investments.

The Nasdaq Stock Market has a larger dollar volume and trades more shares per day than any other U.S. market. Nasdaq is a subsidiary of the National Association of Securities Dealers, Inc. (NASD®), the largest securities-industry, self-regulatory organization in the United States.
