Nasdaq Breaks All-Time Share Volume Record - Nasdaq Composite Index Reaches Record Close

The Nasdaq Stock Market® today set a new world record, as preliminary figures indicate share volume exceeded 1.437 billion shares. No other equities market has ever traded more shares in a single day. The Nasdaq Composite Index® soared 91.21 points today in its sixth largest one-day point gain to close at an all-time high of 2966.43.
"Nasdaq's newly upgraded trading system met the challenge of today's record volume with remarkable efficiency. Known as the Enterprise Wide Network II, our system can handle up to 1,500 transactions per second and is ready for the even greater volumes that the are surely on the way," said Frank G. Zarb, Chairman and CEO of the National Association of Securities Dealers, Inc. (NASD® ).
This is the 105th time this year that Nasdaq® has traded over one billion shares in a single day.
