Nasdaq Announces End-Of-Month Open Short Interest Positions In Nasdaq Stocks As Of Settlement Date February 27, 2015

At the end of the settlement date of February 27, 2015, short interest in 2,269 Nasdaq Global MarketSM securities totaled 7,619,971,690 shares compared with 7,574,745,109 shares in 2,266 Global Market issues reported for the prior settlement date of February 13, 2015. The end-of-February short interest represents 4.69 days average daily Nasdaq Global Market share volume for the reporting period, compared with 3.94 days for the prior reporting period.

Short interest in 658 securities on The Nasdaq Capital MarketSM totaled 674,407,421 shares at the end of the settlement date of February 27, 2015 compared with 681,766,244 shares in 653 securities for the previous reporting period. This represents 4.08 days average daily volume, compared with the previous reporting period’s figure of 4.76.

In summary, short interest in all 2,927 Nasdaq® securities totaled 8,294,379,111 shares at the February 27, 2015 settlement date, compared with 2,919 issues and 8,256,511,353 shares at the end of the previous reporting period. This is 4.64 days average daily volume, compared with an average of 4.00 days for the previous reporting period.

The open short interest positions reported for each Nasdaq security reflect the total number of shares sold short by all broker/dealers regardless of their exchange affiliations.  A short sale is generally understood to mean the sale of a security that the seller does not own or any sale that is consummated by the delivery of a security borrowed by or for the account of the seller.
