Average daily trades totalled 70,171 in 2003, compared to 58,166 in 2002. The underlying dollar value of the derivatives products traded on the Montréal Exchange in 2003 rose to over $30 billion, on average, on a daily basis, compared to $20 billion in 2002.
The number of contracts held ("Open Interest") stood at 1.3 million on December 31, 2003, up 15% compared to December 31, 2002. Open Interest is a leading indicator of trading activity on the Montréal exchange. The value of this indicator has risen by more than 45% since the Montréal Exchange completed its conversion to a derivatives products exchange in late 2001.
