Monthly Trading Statements For BME Markets - Total Trading Volumes Rise 60% In July From The Same Year-Earlier Period - Turnover Exceeds One Trillion Euros In The First Seven Months Of 2007

  • The trading volume in equities reached a total of 148.637 billion euros in July, an increase of 52% from the same month in 2006.

  • Some 2,654,646 contracts were traded on MEFF in July. Highlights for the month included the performance of the IBEX 35 Futures, with 745,602 contracts traded, and of the Mini IBEX Futures, with 249,289 contracts-- increases for the period of 54% and 114%, respectively.

  • A record for warrants and certificates was set during the month and the year: trading volumes in July reached 488 million euros, an increase of 160% over the same year-earlier month. The accumulated trading volume for the first seven months of the year stood at 3.010 billion euros, breaking the record set in 2006.

  • The volume of corporate debt traded on the AIAF grew 42.3% in July, to 109.28 billion euros.

    Equities

    In July, trading in equities on the Spanish market through SIBE reached a total of 148.637 billion euros, an increase of 52% from the same month in 2006. The number of trades rose 94% in the same period to 2.9 million.

    The accumulated trading volume for the first seven months of the year climbed 60% from the same period in 2007 to 1.007.976 trillion; while the number of trades rose 57% in the same period.

    Trading on the Latibex, BME’s market for Latin American shares, was up 37% in July from a year earlier. In the first seven months of the year, trading on the Latibex rose 13% from a year earlier.

    In the ETF segment, trading increased 47% in July from the previous month, to 444 million euros.

    Warrants and Certificates

    In July, trading in the market for warrants and certificates reached a total of 488 million euros, an increase of 160% over the same year-earlier period and the highest-ever trading figure for a single month. The number of trades surged 139% in this same period to 70,998.

    The accumulated figure for 2007 reached 3.010 billion euros, up 75% from the same period in 2006 and breaking the earlier record set in 2006. The number of trades rose 70%.

    Futures and Options

    Trading in futures and options on the MEFF market reached 2,654,646 contracts. Highlights for the month included the performance of the IBEX 35 Futures, with a total of 745,602 contracts, and that of the Mini IBEX Futures, with 264,289 contracts, representing increases of 54% and 114%, respectively, from July 2006. In the same period, trading in IBEX 35 Options grew 35% on a total of 374,559 contracts.

    The accumulated trading volume for the first seven months of the year totalled 24.7 million contracts, underpinned by a strong performance on the part of IBEX35 futures, with 5 million contracts-- an increase of 40% over the year before—and the Mini IBEX futures, with 1.6 million contracts—an increase of 74% in the period.

    Corporate Debt

    The volume of Corporate Debt traded on AIAF in the month of July climbed 42.3% from a year earlier, to 109.280 billion euros, setting a new monthly record. The accumulated trading volume for the first seven months of 2007 rose 30.5% from the same year-earlier period to 650.099 billion.

    New issues in July also hit a record, with a total volume of 77.961 billion euros, up 44.7% from the same month in 2006. The total volume of new issues in 2007 reached 400.738 billion euros (+33.9% up).

    The outstanding balance at the end of July broke through the 700.000 billion-euro mark to stand at 710.902 billion euros, 33% more than the year before.

    SENAF

    The volume of Public Debt traded on SENAF, the electronic debt market, reached a total of 4.450 billion euros in the month of July .
