MNI Launches China Auto Purchase Sentiment Survey - Comprehensive Data Exploring Consumers’ Attitudes Toward The Car Market

Date 23/04/2015

MNI Indicators today launched a new set of independent monthly indicators designed to track Chinese consumers’ attitudes toward the automotive market.

The MNI China Auto Purchase Sentiment Survey offers unique insight into the sentiment and behaviour of consumers in the world’s largest car market. Based on a monthly survey of Chinese consumers, the new indicators illuminate trends in the sector and possess high predictive power over car sales, leading the official data by eight months.

A broad range of more than 1,000 respondents are interviewed across China every month regarding their views on a variety of pertinent questions. The survey provides direct access to the opinions of Chinese car buyers by examining their attitudes and plans towards car purchase, their budget and trends in ownership. In addition, the China Auto Purchase Sentiment Survey includes a complete historical dataset with data going as far back as 2007 that can easily be compared with official data and used to analyse trends in a comprehensive manner.

In-depth analysis allows auto-makers, investors, economists, and corporates to identify economic trends and to make informed investment and business decisions. The survey’s ability to track and forecast trends in households’ views on the car market makes it an indispensable dataset for anyone looking at the Chinese car sector.

Axel Schorn, Head of MNI Indicators, said, “The new MNI China Auto Purchase Sentiment Survey belongs to our existing suite of economic sentiment indicators that provide essential insights into the most closely watched emerging markets and frontier economies. It provides further depth to our already detailed examination of the Chinese consumer by further analysing this important segment of the Chinese economy.”

Philip Uglow, Chief Economist, MNI Indicators, said, “China’s car market is the largest in the world and contributes significantly to the Chinese economy every year. Knowing where it‘s heading in the short- and long-term is critical for anyone in the auto industry but also for watchers of the Chinese and global economy. Our monthly survey probes the minds of Chinese consumers to understand their views and illuminate trends in the sector."
