MGEX total futures and options volume for 2002 reached 1,262,769 contracts, a 26 percent increase versus calendar year 2001 volume and a 6 percent increase versus the previous annual volume record of 1,188,815 contracts, established in 1999.
Total futures volume for 2002 increased 6 percent to 1,201,543. The previous annual futures volume record was set in 1999 when a total of 1,134,945 contracts traded. Total annual options volume was 61,226 contracts, an increase of 14 percent from the 1999 record of 53,870 contracts.
Hard red spring wheat, the Exchange's flagship contract, set records in both futures and options. Spring wheat futures volume totaled 1,199,149 contracts during 2002. This exceeded the 1999 record by 79,337 contracts. Options volume totaled 61,086 contracts in 2002. This was an increase of 7,840 contracts from the 1999 record.
