Minneapolis Grain Exchange Breaks Annual Trading Volume

The Minneapolis Grain Exchange (MGEX) announced today that the record calendar year trading volume record, established in 1999, was surpassed on Wednesday, November 27, 2002, with 21 trading days left in the calendar year.

At the close of trade on November 29, 2002, the last trading day in November, year-to-date MGEX volume totaled 1,196,532 contracts. Of the 1,196,532 contracts traded through the end of November, 1,141,231 were futures, 55,301 were options. The prior record for total calendar year exchange volume was recorded in 1999 when 1,188,815 futures and options contracts were traded.

Hard red spring wheat futures volume totaled 1,139,573 contracts through the end of November 2002, the equivalent of over 5.6 billion bushels of wheat. The previous annual volume record for hard red spring wheat futures was recorded in 1999 when 1,119,812 contracts were traded. Hard red spring wheat options have traded 55,287 contracts year-to-date, breaking the previous volume record of 53,246 contracts established in 1999. MGEX, established in 1881, is the only market for hard red spring wheat, white wheat, durum wheat, and NSI and NCI futures and options. For more information about MGEX, visit www.mgex.com.
