MCX Weekly Market Report - Natural Gas November Contract Shrinks 2.60% To Rs307.60 /1MMBTU But November Crude Oil Contract Gains 2.38 % At Rs3,529/ BBL

Total turnover (single- sided) of all MCX contracts for the week October 19 - 25, 2007 (Friday-Thursday) was Rs 59,618.94 crore.

MCX COMDEX at 2331.20 points rose by 0.16% on the previous close. MCX Agri- Index closed down 1.11% at 1661.37 points, MCX Energy Index at 2655.73 points gained 1.22% but MCX Metal Index at 2574.70 points lost 0.50%.

In the bullion segment, MCX Gold contracts registered a turnover of Rs 18,552.97 crore. Open interest of all gold contracts was 13,591 kgs and total volume 1,89,822 kgs. The December gold contract was up 0.11% at Rs 9828 per 10 gms on the previous week close.

Silver contracts clocked a turnover of Rs 11,570.83 crore. Open interest for all silver contracts was 4,34,395 kgs and total volume 6,373,350 kgs. Silver for December delivery rose by 0.27% at Rs 18,367 per kg.

In the metal segment, MCX Copper contracts across the board registered a turnover of Rs 6163.43 crore. Open interest was 15,723 tonnes and total volume 201,158 tonnes. Copper for November delivery lost1.63 % at Rs 304.30 per kg.

MCX Zinc contracts recorded a turnover of Rs 3760.69 crore. Open interest was 58,950 tonnes and total volume 323,860 tonnes. The October contract lost 3.88% at Rs 114. per kg.

Nickel contracts turnover was Rs 1361.46 crore, open interest 1,259 tonnes and volume 10,787 tonnes. The October contract went down by2.64 % at Rs 1244.40 per kg.

Lead contracts clocked a turnover of Rs 4750.74 crore, OI of 16,075 tonnes and volume of 328,730 tonnes. Lead for October delivery receded 1.94% at Rs 144.05 per kg.

In the Energy segment, all MCX crude oil contracts registered a turnover of Rs 11,473.09 crore. Open interest was 2,234,700 barrels and total volume 33,506,100 barrels. The November contract rose by 2.38 % at Rs 3529 per barrel.

Natural gas contracts recorded a turnover of Rs 473.83 crore, open interest of755,000 mmbtu and total volume of 15,476,000 mmbtu. The November contract slid by 2.60% at Rs 307.60 per mmBTU.

Some of the other major agro-commodities traded on MCX registered the following turnover:

  • All Mentha Oil contracts registered a turnover of Rs. 89.98 crore, open interest of 2160 tonnes and total volume of 1798 tonnes. Mentha oil for November delivery fell 1.56% at Rs 493.10 per kg.
  • All MCX Refined Soya Oil contracts, with open interest of 56,740 tonnes, registered a turnover of Rs 808.14 crore and total volume of 164,340 tonnes. The November contract was up 0.91% at Rs 493.50 per 10 kg.
  • MCX Potato (Agra) contracts registered a turnover of Rs.8.41crore, open interest of 11,040 tonnes and total volume of16,140 tonnes. The March 08 contract shrank by 6.50% at Rs 510.40 per quintal (100 kg).
  • The Potato (Tarkeshwar) contract recorded turnover of Rs 13.09 crore, OI of 16,410 tonnes and volume of22,260 tonnes. The November delivery contract closed up 0.95% at Rs 629.90 per quintal.
  • Cardamom contracts registered a turnover of Rs 45.38 crore, OI of321 tonnes and volume of 889 tonnes. The November contract was up by 0.59% at Rs510.50 per kg.
  • MCX Chana contracts recorded a turnover of Rs 87.83 crore, OI of 2,540 tonnes and volume of 36,450 tonnes. The November contract was up 0.04% at Rs 2415 per quintal.
  • MCX Kapaskhali contracts clocked a turnover of Rs 32.62 crore, OI of 19,800 tonnes and volume of43,590 tonnes. The October contract was up 2.42 % at Rs 406.90 per 50 kg.
  • MCX Guarseed contracts recorded turnover of Rs 3.45 crore, OI of 950 tonnes and volume of2,010 tonnes. The November contract gained by 1.67% at Rs 1,708 per quintal.
