MCX Weekly Market Report - MCX Energy Index Recedes By 7.03% And Silver Futures Shrink In The Range Of Rs149and Rs288 - Metals In The Red, Gold Oct Up Marginally

Total turnover (single sided) of all MCX contracts for the week August 17-23, 2007 (Friday-Thursday) was Rs 48,055.34 crore, down 2.1% from the previous close.

MCX COMDEX at 2070.09 points was down 2.71% from the previous close. MCX Agri Index closed down 0.71% at 1744.69 points, MCX Energy Index at 2129.57 points was down7.03% and MCX Metal Index at 2380.32 points was up 0.73%.

In the Bullion segment, MCX Gold contracts registered a turnover of Rs 9169.04 crore. Open interest of all gold contracts was 9944 kgs and total volume recorded was 103691 kgs. The October gold contract was up 0.07% at Rs8839 per 10kgs from the previous week close.

Silver contracts clocked a turnover of Rs 10703.25 crore. Open interest for all silver contracts was 645540 kgs and total volume 6,543,200 kgs. Silver for September delivery was down 1.49% at Rs 16,169 per kg.

In the Metal segment, MCX Copper contracts across the board registered a turnover of Rs 9,157.77 crore. Open interest was 13,702 tonnes and total volume 316,019 tonnes. Copper for August delivery was up 2.75% at Rs 295.25 per kg.

MCX Zinc contracts recorded a turnover of Rs 4,792.73 crore. Open interest was 36,065 tonnes and total volume 375,335 tonnes. The August contract was up 2.61% at Rs 129.70 per kg.

Nickel contracts turnover was Rs 1,810.93 crore, open interest 1,683.7 tonnes and volume 16,225.2 tonnes. The August contract went up by 9.58% at Rs 1153.9 per kg.

Lead contracts clocked turnover of Rs 2,458.91 crore, OI of 10,325 tonnes and volume of 200,175 tonnes. Lead for August delivery was up by 9.1% at Rs 130.7 per kg.

In the Energy segment, all MCX crude oil contracts registered a turnover of Rs 7,770.25 crore. Open interest was 954,200 barrels and total volume 26,908,200 barrels. The September contract was down 3.75% at Rs 2847 per barrel.

Natural gas contracts recorded a turnover of Rs 646.68 crore, open interest of 2,774,000 mmbtu and total volume of 24,501,500 mmbtu. The September contract lost 18.7% at Rs 239.6 per mmBTU.

Some of the other major agri-commodities traded on MCX registered the following turnover:
  • All Mentha Oil contracts registered a turnover of Rs. 172.48 crore, open interest of 1,204 tonnes and total volume of 3,200 tonnes. Mentha oil for August delivery was down 2.55% at Rs 526.7 per kg.
  • All MCX Refined Soya Oil contracts, with open interest of 36,210 tonnes, registered a turnover of Rs 651.40 crore and total volume of 134,760 tonnes. The September contract was down 0.76% at Rs 483.9 per 10 kg.
  • MCX Potato (Agra) contracts registered a turnover of Rs. 92.08 crore, open interest of 49,080 tonnes and total volume of 143,670 tonnes. The September contract was up 0.24% at Rs 629.9 per quintal (100 kg).
  • The Potato (Tarkeshwar) contract recorded turnover of Rs 13.96 crore, OI of 20,820 tonnes and volume of 20,490 tonnes. The September delivery contract closed down 0.36% at Rs 672.8 per quintal.
  • Cardamom contracts registered a turnover of Rs 81.81 crore, OI of 393 tonnes and volume of 1518 tonnes. The September contract fell by 6.71% at Rs 514.5 per kg.
  • MCX Chana contracts recorded a turnover of Rs 43.70 crore, OI of 3420 tonnes and volume of 18,520 tonnes. The September contract was up 0.47% at Rs 2340 per quintal.
  • MCX Kapaskhali contracts clocked a turnover of Rs 19.18 crore, OI of 13,365 tonnes and volume of 25,785 tonnes. The August contract advanced by 3.42 % at Rs 377.8 per 50 kg.
  • MCX Guarseed contracts recorded turnover of Rs 29.88 crore, OI of 1,930 tonnes and volume of 16,240 tonnes. The September contract gained 1.48% to close at Rs 1818 per quintal. <./ul>
