MCX Weekly Market Report - Copper August Rises 3.4%, Potato Agra Up 4.23%

Total turnover (single sided) of all MCX contracts for the week June 29 to July 5, 2007 (Friday-Thursday) was down 27.4% from the previous close at Rs 35,553.69 crore.

MCX COMDEX at 2143.98 points was up 0.5% from the previous close. MCX Agri Index closed up 1.26% at 1754.94 points, MCX Energy Index at 2218.96 points was up 0.89% and MCX Metal Index at 2477.93 points was down 0.12%.

In the Bullion segment, MCX Gold contracts registered a turnover of Rs 7958.66 crore. Open interest of all gold contracts was 16,692.2 kgs and total volume recorded was 91,799 kgs. The August gold contract was down 0.8% from the previous week at Rs 8597/10 gms.

Silver contracts clocked turnover of Rs 6661.6 crore. Open interest for all silver contracts was 509,895 kgs and total volume was 3,855,785 kgs. Silver September closed down 0.97% at Rs 17,211 per kg.

In the Metal segment, MCX Copper contracts across the board registered a turnover of Rs 8401.87 crore. Open interest was 15,361 tonnes and total volume 267,815 tonnes. Copper for August delivery was up 3.4% at Rs 319.25 per kg.

MCX Zinc contracts recorded a turnover of Rs 3,694.72 crore. Open interest was 39,880 tonnes and total volume 262,345 tonnes. The July contract was down 0.11% at Rs 140.65 per kg.

In the Energy segment, all MCX crude oil contracts registered a turnover of Rs 4897.87 crore. Open interest was 2,044,300 barrels and total volume 17,079,900 barrels. The July contract was up 1.76% at Rs 2889 per barrel.

Natural gas contracts recorded a turnover of Rs 126.68 crore, open interest of 1,637,500 mmbtu and total volume of 4,631,500 mmbtu. The July contract was down 2.33% at Rs 268.6 per mmBTU.

Some of the other major agri-commodities traded on MCX registered the following turnover -

• All Mentha Oil contracts registered a turnover of Rs. 133.11 crore, open interest of 1,009.08 tonnes and total volume of 2555.28 tonnes. Mentha oil for July delivery was down 1.2% at Rs 509.4 per kg.
• All MCX Refined Soy Oil contracts, with open interest of 47,390 tonnes, registered a turnover of Rs 1266.37 crore and total volume of 254,780 tonnes. The July contract was up 1.92% at Rs 502.7 per 10 kg.
• MCX Potato (Agra) contracts registered a turnover of Rs. 108.01 crore, open interest of 50,130 tonnes and total volume of 160,380 tonnes. The July contract was up 4.23% at Rs 658.5 per quintal (100 kg).
• MCX chana contracts recorded a turnover of Rs 41.1 crore, OI of 4,830 tonnes and volume of 17,300 tonnes.The July contract was up 0.97% at Rs 2389 per quintal.
