As of May 27 the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 2.12% in May, closing at 12548.35. Stock market indexes in Europe, Asia and globally were down in May, according to preliminary monthly figures from global index providers, Dow Jones Indexes and STOXX Ltd.

  • The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 2.12% in May, closing at 12548.35. Year-to-date, the index is down 5.40%.
  • Measuring Europe, the Dow Jones STOXX 50 Index is down 2.81% for May, closing at 3146.10 . Year-to-date, the index is down 14.60%.
  • Measuring Eastern Europe, the Dow Jones STOXX EU Enlarged Total Market Index is up 0.75% for May, closing at 308.14. Year-to-date, the index is down 15.70%.
  • The performance of the Dow Jones STOXX EU Enlarged 15 blue-chip index is up 0.45% for May, closing at 3197.86. The index is down 13.67% so far this year.
  • The Dow Jones Asian Titans 50 Index fell 0.34% in May, to 171.89. So far this year, the index is down 1.64%
  • The Dow Jones Global Titans 50 Index fell 2.38% in May, closing at 218.97. Year-to-date, the index is down 8.80%.

MAY 2008 Sector Winners and Losers

  • In the U.S., the Dow Jones U.S. Technology Index was the biggest winner in May, posting a 4.21% gain. The Dow Jones U.S. Financials Index posted the biggest loss, dropping 5.36%.
  • In Europe, the Dow Jones STOXX 600 Basic Resources Index posted the biggest gain, climbing 4.18%. The Dow Jones STOXX 600 Banks Index had the sharpest decline, falling 8.16%.
  • In Asia, the Dow Jones Asia-Pacific Oil & Gas Index posted the biggest gain, rising 10.70%. The Dow Jones Asia-Pacific Financials Index posted the biggest loss, down 3.92%.
  • Globally, the Dow Jones World Basic Resources Titans Index had the best performance, climbing 7.31%. The Dow Jones World Banks Titans Index posted the biggest loss, dropping 7.90%.

Dow Jones STOXX EU Enlarged Total Market Index (TMI) is a European broad benchmark index. Dow Jones STOXX EU Enlarged 15 Index is a European blue chip index. Both indexes measure the performance of the 12 new member states that joined the European Union in May 2004 and January 2007.

The Dow Jones Asian Titans 50 Index includes 50 of the biggest and best-known Asia/Pacific blue-chip companies from six countries.
