Dr Mark Mobius, regarded by many in the financial industry as one of the most successful emerging markets investors over the last 20 years, was a guest of the Warsaw Stock Exchange on 29 June.
During the meeting attended by WSE President Ludwik Sobolewski and analysts, brokers, fund managers as well as journalists Mark Mobius gave a presentation entitled “Role of Emerging Markets at the Time of a Global Downturn.”
President Sobolewski welcomed the guest to the WSE and noted that the venue of the meeting and the topic of the presentation correspond well because the WSE is a regional leader.
“The crisis gives developing countries like Poland the opportunity to play an increasing role in the global economy; a positive role,” said Mark Mobius about the outlook for the Polish market
In his presentation, Mark Mobius made a comparative analysis and described the growth potential of emerging markets compared to well-developed economies. He also described the situation in commodities markets, compared equity indicators of emerging markets to the US market, and analised the potential of domestic markets of different countries.
The presentation also described bull and bear periods in emerging markets over the past 20 years. The analysis indicated that the average uptrend lasted 18 months and a downtrend 5 months. Indices in bull markets grew by 98 percent on average while in bear markets they shrank by 33 percent on average.
The last part of the presentation focused on the CEE region. Mark Mobius compared the Polish equities market performance and our currency with the Czech Republic, Russia and Hungary.

Mark Mobius has spent more than 30 years working in emerging markets all over the world. He joined Templeton in 1987 as President of Templeton Emerging Markets Fund, Inc. Operating through offices in 14 countries of emerging markets, he manages emerging markets equity portfolios.
