Friday 21 September saw a new record high of 235,011 trades in UK equities alone, breaking the previous record high of 202,602 set in April last year. 145,964 trades were executed on SETS - the Exchange's electronic order book - achieving another record, almost 50 per cent higher than the 99,438 trades executed on 15 June this year.
In September, more than 1.5 million trades went through SETS, up almost 100 per cent on the same month last year. This brings the SETS totals for the year to 10.7 million trades to a value of £487 billion.
extraMARK, the Exchange's market for innovative investment companies and products, also saw record activity in the trading of Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) in September. Total trading in ETFs reached a value of £657 million - the highest value for ETF trading ever recorded in one month, the previous record being £488 million during June 2001.
