London Stock Exchange Monthly Market Report For April 2002 - Number Of UK & International Trades Up 14% On April 2001 - Number Of UK Shares Traded Up 38% On April 2001

The number of UK and international trades on the London Stock Exchange rose 14 per cent in April to 4.2 million trades, compared with 3.7 million trades in the same month in 2001. There were 21 trading days in April 2002 compared with 19 days in April 2001. The average number of daily trades in UK and international shares rose by two per cent from 194,243 in April 2001 to 199,045 in April 2002.

57.9 billion UK shares were traded in April, up from 42 billion in April 2001. This represented an increase of 38 per cent year on year.

The average number of daily trades on SETSä, the Exchange's electronic order book, rose to 76,552 in April compared with 55,256 in April 2001, an increase of 39 per cent. The value of these trades rose to £57.2 billion, up from £47.1 billion in April 2001. This represented an increase of 21 per cent year on year.

There were 21 new issues during April 2002, 12 of which were IPOs. The IPOs were split between AIM (5) and the main market (7), raising £278 million between them.
