LME Announces Partnership With Local Education Charity - LME To Provide Bursaries To Fund Students Through University - LME Staff To Mentor Students From Local Tower Hamlets School

Date 22/09/2011

The London Metal Exchange (LME) is working with the Tower Hamlets Education Business Partnership to provide bursaries and professional mentoring to school students from one of the most deprived areas in England.

Starting with the current academic year (2011/12) the LME will be involved in two related projects with the Sir John Cass School, a local secondary school that prioritises admissions from children in care and from those with recognised social or medical needs.

“We are very pleased to be able to offer both financial and professional assistance to young people from the Borough of Tower Hamlets,” said Martin Abbott, chief executive of the LME. “We hope that this project will benefit our local community in providing support to those who need it most.”

The LME Supporting Futures bursary scheme will donate £2,000 per year to four exceptional students to help fund their university careers. Each year four more students will be selected for funding, so that a total of 12 students will continually be involved in the scheme.

In addition to this, the LME will provide a mentoring scheme for selected students from Year 9 who will receive guidance from staff members. Once trained, each of the 12 mentors will continue to provide support to mentees throughout their school career.
