Lithuanian Capital Market Ready To Take Challenges Of Membership In The European Union

Marking its 10th anniversary, the National Stock Exchange of Lithuania (NSEL) held a conference in Vilnius "Accession of the Lithuanian Capital Market to the Single Market of the EU". About 300 people attended the conference including representatives from brokerage firms, capital market institutions from Lithuania and abroad, Federation of European Stock Exchanges as well as listed companies at the NSEL.

This conference focused on accession of the Lithuanian capital market into European Union (EU) common market. Chancellor of the Government of Lithuania Mr. Antanas Zenonas Kaminskas talked about creation of the securities market in Lithuania and the Stock Exchange. Mr. Petras Auštrevicius, Director General of the European Committee under the Government of Lithuania, and Ms. Audrute Dziskiene, Director of the Finance Market Department of the Ministry of Finance, discussed challenges and opportunities of Lithuania after entering the EU. Virgilijus Poderys, Chairman of the Lithuanian Securities Commission, and Romas Matiukas, President of the Lithuanian Finance Brokers Association, estimated opportunities of the Lithuanian capital market in the EU.

Foreign guests, Mr. Gregor Pozniak, Deputy Secretary General of the Federation of European Securities Exchanges, Xavier Leroy, Director of FTSEurofirst, Euronext, Wieslaw Rozlucki, President of the Warsaw Stock Exchange, Jukka Ruuska, OMHEX Deputy of Executive Director, HEX Integrated Markets president, shared experience of their institutions.

Rimantas Busila, President of the NSEL, made an overview of the NSEL achievements during the ten years and its future outlook in the competitive EU market.

NSEL holds trading in shares, bonds, and Government securities. Currently shares of 45 companies and 36 issues Government securities traded at the NSEL. During eight months of 2003, the total NSEL turnover stood at LTL 1.31bn (Euro 0.38 bn). The total market capitalisation as of 11 September 2003 comprised LTL 18.08 bn (Euro 5.24 bn). The dynamics of the securities market in Lithuania are reflected by the official NSEL indices LITIN-10, LITIN and LITIN-G.
