LIFFE Trades Record £45 Trillion Worth Of Contracts In First Half 2001

The London International Financial Futures and Options Exchange (LIFFE) traded an average daily nominal value of £371 billion (€608 billion) in June and totalled £45 trillion (€73 trillion) for the first half of 2001, maintaining its position as the world's largest electronic exchange by value traded.

LIFFE's Chief Executive, Hugh Freedberg said, "Volume for the first half of 2001 is up by 47% over the same period last year with an average daily volume of 776,405. LIFFE's flagship Three Month Euribor futures contract has seen a 47% increase in volume in the first half of 2001, trading over 44 million contracts (representing a value €4.4 trillion). Both the Swapnote and Universal Stock Futures contracts enjoyed continued growth in trading volumes."

LIFFE traded 18,383,997 futures and options contracts during the month of June 2001 representing an average daily volume of 875,428 contracts. Volume for the first half of 2001 amounted to 98,603,512 futures and options contracts, up 47% on the same period last year.

LIFFE's equity products volume rose 38% with Individual Equity Options up 79% year-to-date.

LIFFE's suite of Swapnote® futures contracts saw continued growth, trading over 500,000 futures contracts during June 2001.

LIFFE's Universal Stock Futures traded a 92% increase on May 2001; total volume for the month of June amounted to 350,000 Stock futures contracts (representing a value of £658 million in underlying shares), up 75% on May 2001.

Open interest, a good indicator of liquidity and long term use of the market, stood at 8,916,325 on 29 June 2001.
