LIFFE trades £263BN per day in June 1999

The nominal value of contracts traded on the London International Financial Futures and Options Exchange (LIFFE) averaged £263 billion daily during June 1999, up 7% on June 1998 and 28% up on May 1999. Hugh Freedberg, LIFFE's Chief Executive, said "June saw open interest in LIFFE's Three Month Euribor contracts continue to grow for the sixth consecutive month. Average daily nominal value in the Three Month Euribor rose 46% over May to £130 billion. LIFFE maintained its 90% market share of exchange-traded euro products." LIFFE's Three Month Euribor future set a new daily volume record trading 372,435 contracts on 2 June and a new monthly record of 4,421,379 contracts. On 29 June LIFFE successfully launched Futures and Options on the FTSE -Stars, containing 29 stocks from among the largest and most liquid companies from the Eurozone. LIFFE's open interest, a good indicator of liquidity and long-term use of the market stood at 6,091,749 contracts, valued at £2,538 billion (Euro equivalent 3,907 billion).
