LIFFE Announces 10 Additional Universal Stock Futures

The London International Financial Futures and Options Exchange (LIFFE) announced an additional 10 Universal Stock Futures taking the total number it will launch for trading on 29 January 2001 to 25.

LIFFE has selected the following additional companies:

Telecoms

France Telecom SA (France), Telecom Italia SpA (Italy), Telefonica SA (Spain).

Technology

Siemens AG (Germany), Intel Corp.(USA), Microsoft Corp. (USA).

Banks

ING Groep NV (Netherlands), BSCH (Banco Santander Central Hispano SA) (Spain) .

Oils

Total Fina Elf SA (France), ENI Spa (Italy).

Hugh Freedberg, LIFFE's Chief Executive said, "The decision to launch a further 10 Universal Stock Futures on day one has been in direct response to the strong demand from the market. Over the last month we have been holding roadshows throughout Europe which have received extremely positive feedback. As with our originally announced "First 15" the additional 10 stocks are each global, highly capitalised and actively traded from the telecoms, technology, oil, pharmaceutical and banking sectors. We have expanded our international coverage to include the key markets of Italy and Spain."

The advantage of Universal Stock Futures is that they offer investors and traders a cheap, efficient and simple way to gain exposure to individual global stocks. LIFFE CONNECTâ„¢, LIFFE's electronic trading system, is now available directly in 328 dealing rooms around the world, subject to any local regulatory restrictions which may exist. From January 29 2001 LIFFE customers in 22 countries will be able to buy and sell futures on 25 global equities via a single trading platform and clear through a unified clearing system.
