KLSE And MDEX Resume Trading Tomorrow

Date 12/09/2001

Trading at the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (KLSE) and Malaysia Derivatives Exchange (MDEX) will resume normal operations tomorrow, Thursday, 13 September 2001.

Upon resumption of trading, KLSE and MDEX will continue to monitor the market situation closely and will take appropriate actions, as necessary, to ensure an orderly and fair market.

KLSE and MDEX were closed for trading today Wednesday, 12 September 2001. Earlier, KLSE announced that the closure for trading will not affect any other operations of the KLSE Group. All clearing, settlement and depository operations operated as usual.

The decision to close KLSE and MDEX was made after full consideration of prevailing circumstances in the international capital markets which may impact on the orderly and fair functioning of the Malaysian securities market. The closure further provides investors with sufficient time and opportunity to fully assess the situation and take into account all facts before making decisions on their investment. This is pursuant to the duty of the Exchange under the Securities Industry Act 1983 to ensure an orderly and fair market in the securities that are traded through its facilities.
