During the month of September, the Kansas City Board of Trade set new annual volume records for the hard red winter wheat futures contract and for the exchange as a whole. Three months remain to build on these increases.
At the end of September, total exchange volume of 4,196,586 was 46.2 percent of last year at this time and had exceeded the previous annual volume record set last year by 6.1 percent.
Also at the end of September, hard red winter wheat futures volume was posting a gain of 40 percent compared to last year to date and had surpassed the previous annual volume record set in 2005 by 2.0 percent. Year-to-date hard red winter wheat futures volume is at 3,757,112 contracts.
Open interest in the hard red winter wheat futures contract continues to post gains compared to last year with an increase 43.9 percent compared to the end of September 2005.
Wheat options volume posted a gain of 17 percent compared to last September. Open interest is 78.3 percent higher than last year at the end of September and has increased 16.4 percent in the last month.
The Kansas City Board of Trade, founded in 1856, is the world's largest futures market for hard red winter wheat. This year, the exchange is celebrating its 150-year anniversary.
