KCBT Trading Volume Rates Second Among All Previous Octobers

Trading activity at the Kansas City Board of Trade during the month of October saw a significant boost compared to September and came in second compared to all previous Octobers. Only October 2002 saw more volume than October 2003 and that was amidst extremely volatile market conditions. A total of 282,758 contracts were traded in October 2003 versus 328,036 contracts in October 2002.

Both wheat futures and wheat options volume topped all previous records with the exception of 2002. Wheat futures volume also posted a gain of 43.9 percent compared to September 2003. Wheat options volume posted a gain of 34.1 percent compared to September 2003 and the exchange as a whole was up 42.3 percent compared to September 2003 totals.

Also during the month of October, open interest swelled in all of the exchange's active contracts when compared to the previous month. Wheat futures open interest grew 2.9 percent, wheat options increased 3 percent and Value Line. futures grew 15.8 percent.

The Kansas City Board of Trade, chartered in 1876, is the world's largest futures market for hard red winter wheat.
