Kansas City--October 1, 2009--The Kansas City Board of Trade?s Hard Red Winter Wheat futures trading volume for the month of September was the third largest for that calendar month in the 153-year history of the exchange.
HRW wheat futures trading volume for the month of September totaled 314,522 contracts, which was an increase of 12.1 percent compared to September 2008. Record trading volume for the month of September is 345,462 contracts in 2007; 2005 volume is in second place at 337,576 contracts.
According to KCBT traders, there was a combination of factors that resulted in large trading volume. Large spread trade volume was seen during the month of September because intra-market spreads were trading close to full carry. Kansas City has seen an increase in fund activity and commercial traders are actively rolling hedge positions forward. Additionally, wheat crops are large domestically and globally.
Wheat options trading volume of 12,276 contracts was a gain of 34.6 percent compared to September 2008 and 85.7 percent compared to August 2009.
Total exchange volume of 326,798 contracts was an increase of 12.8 percent compared to September 2008 volume of 289,720 contracts.
Open interest swelled during the month of September. Wheat futures open interest of 121,123 contracts was 35.8 percent higher than at the end of September 2008 and 19.9 percent higher than at the end of August 2009. Wheat options open interest of 17,119 contracts showed an increase of 8.1 percent when compared to the end of September 2008 and 68.6 percent when compared to the end of August 2009.
