KCBT August monthly volume overtakes all previous records for August

Date 01/09/1999

During the month of August, volume traded at the Kansas City Board of Trade transcended all previous records for the month of August. August volume of 272,203 contracts broke the previous record of 267,148 contracts, which was set in 1984. The spate of activity was led in large part by wheat futures and options trading as wheat prices have been very volatile in the last month. Wheat futures volume traded in August amounted to 256,532 contracts, which bested the previous August record of 203,858 contracts, set just last year. Wheat options volume traded in August was 12,694 contracts. The previous August record was 11,374 contracts, also set last year. Concerns about the spring wheat crop, corn and soybean crops, and export demand for all U.S. wheat have been impacting prices, creating the increase in wheat futures and options trading, traders said.
