The Kansas City Board of Trade trading volume for the month of February posted large gains over February 2009 and January 2010 volume and was the third largest for the calendar month in the history of the exchange. A total of 375,311 contracts were traded during the month of February, 25.1 percent more than in February 2009 and 31.4 percent more than were traded last month.
Hard Red Winter wheat futures volume for the month of February totaled 366,782 contracts, an increase of 25.9 percent compared to February 2009 and 31 percent compared to last month. HRW wheat futures volume for the month of February was also the third largest in the exchange's history for the month of February. KCBT traders attributed the volume increase to significant intra-market spread trading. Wheat futures open interest is 75.5 percent higher than it was a year ago at this time.
Wheat options trading volume showed an increase of 50.9 percent compared to last month's trading volume.
Year-to-date volume for the exchange is running 32.7 percent ahead of last year at this time, with wheat futures trading volume up 33.8 percent compared to last year at this time.
