June Volume At CBOE Rises 5% - Year-To-Date Volume Is Up 34% From 2003

The Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE), the world's largest options exchange, announced today that June volume totaled 26,545,956 contracts traded, an increase of 5% over the June 2003 volume of 25,340,487 contracts. Through the end of June, CBOE's year-to-date volume of 180,722,766 contracts traded is 34% ahead of 2003's pace.

    June highlights at CBOE included:

  • During June, volume in index options rose 13% as nearly 11 million contracts traded, while volume in stock option classes (equities) was flat as over 15 million contracts traded.
  • June was the tenth consecutive month that CBOE registered volume gains over year-ago levels.
  • Options on the S&P 500 Index (SPX) were the most-actively traded index options at CBOE during June as volume totaled 4,124,169 contracts, an increase of 41% over 2003. This was the fourth time in CBOE history - and all four have come in the last six months -- that SPX volume has surpassed four million contracts.
  • The top five stock option classes traded at CBOE during June were: Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), General Electric Co. (GE), Citigroup, Inc. (C), New York Community Bancorp, Inc. (NYB), and Taser International, Inc. (TASR).
  • Volume in June at the CBOE Futures Exchange (CFE), launched on March 26th, totaled 10,962 contracts, up 49% from May's 7,334 contracts. On June 16th, open interest at CFE reached a peak of 7,906 contracts, an increase of 52% over the May open interest peak of 5,196 on May 10th.
