June 2016: Brexit Leads To Increased Trading Activity - The Statistical Monthly Report Contains The Latest Trade And Turnover Figures For SIX Swiss Exchange

Trading turnover across all securities on SIX Swiss Exchange and SIX Structured Products Exchange Ltd climbed to CHF 118.1 billion in June 2016. This represents a rise of 29.7% compared with the preceding month. This increase was also reflected in the number of trades, which were up 29.1% on the previous month at 4'369'335.

A significant increase in trading activity was recorded following the Brexit referendum. At 395'787 transactions, the fourth-highest number of trades in the history of SIX Swiss Exchange and SIX Structured Products Exchange Ltd was recorded on 24 June 2016.

The performance of the equities including funds + ETPs segment was as follows in June: There were 4'177'855 trades, an increase of 29.1% on the previous month. This was also reflected in turnover, which was up by 31.2% to CHF 92.3 billion.

Looking at the trend in the year to date, a total of 25'415'225 transactions have therefore been conducted. This represents a 3.6% decline year-on-year, largely due to the record-high transaction volumes following the removal of the EUR/CHF floor in January 2015. The same effect is apparent in trading turnover, which has fallen by 8.7% to CHF 687.1 billion.

New issuer and new participant acquired

SIX Swiss Exchange saw its third IPO this year on 30 June: there was a successful stock market debut for shares in the real estate company Investis Holding SA. With Jane Street Financial Ltd, SIX Swiss Exchange also welcomed its first new participant in 2016. Furthermore, the Swiss exchange announced that it is taking over all distribution and marketing activities of Swiss indices from STOXX AG.
