June 2009 “Islamic Market’s Measure” – Monthly Report On The Performance Of The Dow Jones Islamic Market Indexes

Based on the close of trading on June 23, the global Dow Jones Islamic Market Titans 100 Index, which measures the performance of 100 of the leading Shari’ah compliant stocks globally, lost -1.45% month-to-date, closing at 1734.39. In comparison, the Dow Jones Global Titans 50 Index, which measures the 50 biggest companies worldwide, posted a loss of 1.66%, closing at 141.03.

  • The Dow Jones Islamic Market Asia/Pacific Titans 25 Index, which measures the performance of 25 of the leading Shari’ah compliant stocks in the Asia/Pacific region, decreased -3.87%, closing at 1471.38. The Dow Jones Asian Titans 50 Index, in comparison, posted a loss of -2.62%, closing at 111.04.

  • Measuring Europe, the Dow Jones Islamic Market Europe Titans 25 Index, which measures the performance of the 25 of the leading Shari’ah compliant stocks in Europe, closed at 1721, a loss of -2.38%, while the pan-European blue chip Dow Jones STOXX 50 Index is down -3.47%, closing at 2168.16.

  • Measuring the performance of 50 of the largest Shari’ah compliant U.S. stocks, the Dow Jones Islamic Market U.S. Titans 50 Index decreased, closing at 1779.98. It represents a loss of -0.63%. The U.S. blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average decreased -2.09%, closing at 8322.91.

Dow Jones Islamic Market Indexes Versus Conventional Dow Jones Indexes

In June, the Dow Jones DFM Titans 10 Index, measuring the 10 largest and most liquid stocks listed on the Dubai Financial Market, closed at 2367.47. It is a gain of 1.55% month-to-date.

The Dow Jones Islamic Market Kuwait Index posted a gain of 7.72%, closing at 998.49. Its conventional counterpart index, the Dow Jones Kuwait Composite Index, was up, closing at 237.78. It represents a gain of 5.36%.

The Dow Jones Islamic Market Turkey Index closed at 2292.79, a performance of -0.26% month-to-date, while the Dow Jones Turkey Total Stock Market Index closed at 744.97, a loss of -1.90%.

Measuring the performance of Shari’ah compliant stocks of five of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states, the Dow Jones Islamic Market GCC Index closed at 1336.54, a gain of 5.13%. The conventional Dow Jones GCC Index was up 3.50%, closing at 1378.11.

Other Markets and Asset Classes

The Dow Jones Islamic Market BRIC Equal Weighted Index decreased -9.12%. It had a closing value of 1422.64. By comparison, the Dow Jones BRIC 50 Index closed at 442.20, a loss of -8.62%.

The Dow Jones Citigroup Sukuk Index, which measures the performance of global bonds complying with Islamic investment guidelines, increased 0.14%, closing at 109.06.

The Dow Jones Islamic Market Sustainability Index, which measures sustainable practice business of companies respecting the Shari’ah laws, decreased -2.80%, closing at 1891.68. The conventional Dow Jones Sustainability Index lost -3.57% with a closing value of 791.76.

Global June 2009 Industries Winners and Losers

The three best performing Dow Jones Islamic Market Industry Indexes were Health Care, Technology and Telecommunications with performances of 0.98%, -0.36% and -0.57%, respectively. The Dow Jones Islamic Market Basic Materials, Dow Jones Islamic Market Industrials and Dow Jones Islamic Market Financials indexes were the three worst performing industry indexes with performances of -8.82%, -8.69% and -3.94%, respectively.
