JSE Completes-Six-Year Historical Sector Reclassification Data

Date 09/02/2000

The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) wishes to advise that the historical sector reclassification data of its listed companies has been completed. The data contains the history of the JSE's Indices, sector and equities, and Includes earnings, dividend yields and price earnings ratios. The data covers the period January 1993 to March 1999. Commenting on this complex project, Russell Loubser, Executive President, JSE noted: "The JSE agreed to produce historical data to support the revised Sector Classification System which was implemented on 19 March 1999. A subset of the data was released in June 1999, but we are pleased to note that the entire six-year indices history has, now been completed and is available to interested parties. "The JSE has tried to achieve the highest degree of accuracy, with a 99.9% accuracy achieved on the All Share Index. This is an amazing feat as Indices are a measurement only and therefore difficult to record accurately on an historical basis. It has been the goal of different departments within the JSE, to obtain this accuracy", he concluded. The methodology used to derive the historical index values has been reviewed and approved by the Actuarial Society of South Africa.
