Amsterdam, Brussels, Lisbon, Paris, 5 February 2003 - In January 2003, Euronext's cash markets recorded a total of 12,371,860 transactions, up 14% on December 2002. Year on year, the total for the month was up 9.8%, as was the daily average, which stood at 562,357.
At 31 January 2003, total market capitalisation of the 1,469 companies listed on Euronext markets was €1,405 billion.
Shares
In January, transactions in shares were up 15.4% on the previous month amounting to 11,674,012. The daily average of 530,637 was up 10.9% year-on-year.
The total turnover in shares processed through Euronext's electronic order book rose 22.7% from December to total €113 billion in January. Against a backdrop of persistently poor market conditions, the turnover in shares was nevertheless 19.5% lower than a year earlier.
Trackers
Transactions in trackers were up 60% year-on-year, totalling 32,704. The turnover on those products also rose 31.2% on December during the month.
Derivatives products
Amsterdam, Brussels, Lisbon, Paris, London, 5 February 2003 - Euronext.liffe, the derivatives business of Euronext traded 61 million contracts in January 2003. During the month, average daily volume amounted to 2.7 million contracts, representing an underlying nominal average daily value of €831 billion. The total number of contracts traded and value traded makes Euronext.liffe the world's second largest derivatives exchange.
Euronext.liffe's short term interest rate products traded high volumes in January trading over 19 million contracts, up 47% on last month and up 13% on January 2002. Commodity products at Euronext.liffe traded 563,390 futures and options contracts during the month, up 35% on January 2002.
Total open interest for Euronext.liffe stood at 100 million contracts at the close of trading on 31 January 2003.
