ISE Trades One Billionth Contract

Date 24/05/2005

The International Securities Exchange (NYSE:ISE) said today that it traded its one billionth contract, an important milestone in the evolution of the first fully-electronic options market in the US.

Since ISE's launch on May 26, 2000, the options industry has experienced a rapid increase in industry trading volume. In 2000, industry trading volume averaged about one million contracts per day; in 2004, ISE's own average daily volume was 1.4 million contracts. In 2005, ISE's average daily volume totals 1.7 million contracts.

"ISE is pleased to have played a role in the growth and evolution of the options industry. Electronic trading has helped investors better navigate the financial markets, while also improving market quality. These improved market conditions have helped attract a growing number of retail investors and created an environment that is attractive to institutional investors. The trading of our one billionth contract is especially meaningful for ISE as it coincides so closely with our fifth anniversary," said David Krell, ISE's president and CEO."

Indeed, the options industry has set several trading volume records in 2005. Six of the industry's top 10 trading records have occurred in 2005. According to The Options Clearing Corp., the industry's trading volume records are:

  • 11,254,044 on April 15, 2005
