ISE Reports Monthly Volume For October 2004

The International Securities Exchange (ISE), the world's largest equity options exchange, reported an increase in October trading volume compared to the same year-ago period.

Volume Statistics

  • ISE's equity options market share was 34.4% in October, a 12% increase compared to 30.8% for the same year-ago period.
  • Overall, in its listings, ISE traded more volume in 504 of its 682 issues than any other options exchange.
  • ISE traded 34.1 million equity options contracts, up 25.8% from 27.1 million equity options contracts in the same year-ago period. In October, average daily volume (ADV) in equity options was 1,622,945 contracts, up 37.58% from an ADV of 1,179,573 equity options contracts in the same year-ago period.
  • ISE executed more customer volume in its own listings than any other exchange in October. ISE set a new record for customer volume in its own listings in October, with 26.8 million contracts, surpassing its previous record of 25.2 million set in January 2004.
Monthly Highlights
  • ISE was the lead market in October for options on 27 of the 30 stocks in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which represented 87% of the index's total weighting. ISE was the lead market for options on 265 of the stocks in the Standard & Poor's 500 Index, which represented 71% of the index's total weighting. ISE was the lead market for options on 338 of the 1000 stocks in the Russell 1000 Index, which represented 67% of the index's total weighting.
  • ISE traded its 750 millionth contract on October 20.
  • On October 21, ISE set a market share record of 36.36%, including both equity and index options.
  • A new total trading volume record was set in October as 34.1 million contracts were executed at ISE, compared to 33.2 million contracts in January 2004.
  • For the third time in 2004, ISE traded more options contracts than any other exchange. In October, ISE was the largest US options exchange based on both equity and index options trading volume during any single month.
