The Irish Stock Exchange (“ISE”) has today launched a Guide to REITs (“Guide”) for retail investors.
The Guide was launched at a reception to mark the scheduled admission of Green REIT to the Irish Stock Exchange on Thursday 18th July which was attended by the Minister for Finance, Michael Noonan and Stephen Vernon, Chairman of the Investment Manager of Green REIT.
Speaking at the reception, Aileen O’Donoghue, ISE Director of Strategy, said, “While REITs are common across the globe and there are 13 countries in Europe operating REITs it is the first time that this form of property investment is available in Ireland – a situation only made possible in the Finance Act this year. As REITs are new to the Irish market the ISE believes that is important to provide investors with some key information on the features and characteristics of Irish REITs.”
The ISE’s Guide covers a range of areas which are likely to be of interest to potential retail investors including:
- The main features of REITs
- How REITs are taxed
- How to invest in REITs
- What to expect as a shareholder of REITs
The Guide follows the recent introduction of Listing Rules geared specifically towards REITs that complement the legislative framework established by the Government in 2013.
Ms O’Donoghue added, “The ISE has long supported the introduction of REITs in Ireland, and we are pleased that we were able play our part in facilitating the introduction of a new form of property investment in Ireland.”
