Date 13/02/2002

IPE, Europe's leading energy futures and options exchange, set two new records yesterday, 12 February 2002.

The first record was for total market volume - 216,226 lots were traded yesterday compared to the previous record set on 7 January 2002 when 215,720 lots traded. The underlying value of the volume traded yesterday on the IPE was $4.2 billion.

The second record was set during the morning session of electronic trading, which is from 8am to 9.45am London time. Overall IPE Brent continues to perform strongly and to produce record volumes; the first one of this year was a daily record set on 7 January 2002 when 174,037 lots traded.

2002 began with IPE setting the highest recorded January for total market monthly volume on the Exchange since trading began in 1981 - 2,635,849 lots were traded for January 2002 compared to 2,292,462 lots traded the previous year.

Stephen Gutteridge, Business Development Director, said, "this increase in volumes demonstrates that our Members and customers continue to value the IPE as a safe, transparent and well-regulated market in which to manage their price risk exposure in volatile market conditions."
