The International Petroleum Exchange (IPE), Europe's leading energy futures and options exchange, today reported the best August ever on record for total market volume as well as a record August for its Brent Crude futures contract.

Total market volume for August 2002 was 2,336,282 lots compared to 1,871,362 the same month last year, an increase of 25 percent.

IPE Brent Crude futures traded 1,643,254 lots in August 2002, equivalent to 1.6 billion barrels of crude oil. This is an increase of 2.7 percent over August 2001, when 1,289,152 lots of IPE Brent Crude futures were traded.
