IntercontinentalExchange (ICE) today announced new volume records in the benchmark IPE Brent crude oil and IPE Gas Oil futures contracts. On July 12, IPE Brent volume reached 185,144 contracts, exceeding the earlier record of 181,182 contracts which was set September 14, 2004. Open interest in the IPE Brent contract on July 12 stood at 360,028 contracts.
Also this week, IPE Gas Oil reached record levels of open interest at 238,582 contracts, which exceeded the prior record of 236,172 contracts achieved in 2002.
Each of these records reflects electronically traded contracts following the transition to from IPE’s open-outcry floor in London on April 7, 2005 to fully electronic trading.
