Investor Activity On GPW Group Markets – May 2020

  • GPW Main Market Electronic Order Book[1]  equities turnover value increased by 23.0% YoY to PLN 20.5 billion
  • NewConnect Electronic Order Book turnover value increased by 914.2% YoY to PLN 852.2 million

  • Structured products turnover value increased by 110.7% YoY to PLN 194.5 million

    • Catalyst Electronic Order Book non-Treasury bond turnover value increased by 10.3% to PLN 232.6 million

    • Natural gas turnover volume decreased by 0.9% YoY to 13.6 TWh

In May 2020, total equities turnover value on the GPW Main Market was PLN 21.7 billion, representing a 28.6% increase year on year, while Electronic Order Book turnover value increased by 23.0% year on year to PLN 20.5 billion. Average daily Electronic Order Book equities turnover value stood at PLN 1.025 billion, a 29.1% increase year on year. On the last trading day of May 2020, the WIG index closed at 48,127.64 points, representing a 16.9% decrease year on year.

Total NewConnect equities turnover value increased by 909.1% year on year to PLN 857.6 million, while Electronic Order Book equities turnover increased by 914.2% year on year and stood at
PLN 852.2 million.

Total derivatives turnover volume was 744,900 contracts in May, representing a 35.9% increase year on year. Index futures turnover volume increased by 30.9% year on year to 431,800 contracts. Single-stock futures turnover volume increased by 43.7% year on year to 172,100 contracts. Currency futures turnover volume increased by 61.6% year on year to 120,000 contracts. Index options turnover volume decreased by 13.9% year on year to 21,000 contracts.

Structured products turnover value increased by 110.7% year on year to PLN 194.5 million. ETF turnover value increased by 420.7% year on year to PLN 75.9 million.

At the end of May 2020, Catalyst listed non-Treasury bond value was PLN 92.9 billion, compared to PLN 90.6 billion at the end of May 2019. In May 2020, turnover value of non-Treasury bonds on Catalyst’s Electronic Order Book increased by 10.3% year on year to PLN 232.6 million.

Total TBSP bond turnover value was PLN 7.5 billion, compared to PLN 29.7 billion in May 2019, representing a 74.8% decrease year on year.

Total electricity turnover volume was 19.4 TWh, representing a 6.2% increase year on year, where spot transaction turnover volume increased by 4.5% year on year to 2.9 TWh and forward transaction turnover volume increased by 6.5% year on year to 16.5 TWh.

Total natural gas turnover volume in May was 13.6 TWh, representing a 0.9% decrease year on year, where spot transaction turnover volume increased by 4.6% year on year to 1.7 TWh and forward transaction turnover volume decreased by 1.6% year on year to 11.9 TWh.

Turnover volume of spot transactions in property rights to certificates of origin, excluding rights to certificates of energy efficiency (“white certificates”)[2] was 3.3 TWh, representing a 73.8% decrease year4 on year. However, May 2020 figures in this business line are not comparable year on year due to discontinued trading of cogeneration certificates as of June 2019.

Turnover volume of property rights to certificates of origin of energy efficiency (“white certificates”) decreased by 14.3% year on year to 25.0 ktoe[3].

Turnover volume in Guarantees of Origin of electricity generated from renewable energy sources decreased in May by 33.8% year on year to 1.2 TWh.

At the end of May 2020, the market capitalisation of 397 domestic companies listed on the Main Market was PLN 460.3 billion (EUR 103.4 billion), while the total market capitalisation of 445 domestic and foreign companies listed on the Main Market was PLN 842.2 billion (EUR 189.2 billion).

Bonds of the Polish Development Fund newly listed on Catalyst with an offering of PLN 50 billion.

In May 2020, GPW held 20 trading sessions, compared to 21 in May 2019.

The attachment presents detailed turnover statistics for markets operated by GPW Group. Following the launch of the TGE Organised Trading Facility (OTF), the table includes additional information concerning the forward market in property rights, where no transactions were reported in May.
