International Securities Exchange Reports Monthly Volume For May 2004

International Securities Exchange (ISE), the world's largest equity options exchange, reported an increase in May trading volume compared to the same year-ago period.

Volume Statistics

  • ISE's equity options market share was 34% in May, a 15% increase compared to 29% for the same year-ago period. ISE set a new equity options market share record in May, surpassing its previous record of 33% in April.
  • Overall, in its listings, ISE traded more volume in 502 of its 672 issues than any other options exchange.
  • In May, ISE traded 27.6 million equity options contracts, up 36.7% from 20.2 million equity options contracts in the same year-ago period. In May, average daily volume (ADV) in equity options was 1,378,336 contracts, up 44% from an ADV of 960,176 equity options contracts in the same year-ago period.
  • ISE executed more customer volume in its own listings than any other exchange in May. ISE set a new record for customer volume market share in its own listings in May, with 32%, surpassing its previous record of 31% in April 2004.

Monthly Highlights

  • ISE was the lead market in May for options on 26 of the 30 stocks in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which represented 83% of the index's total weighting. ISE was the lead market for options on 264 of the stocks in the Standard & Poor's 500 Index, which represented 72% of the index's total weighting. ISE was the lead market for options on 337 of the 1000 stocks in the Russell 1000 Index, which represented 67% of the index's total weighting.
  • ISE traded its 600 millionth contract on May 10, less than four months after trading its 500 millionth contract on January 29.
