International Securities Exchange Reports Monthly Volume For December 2004

The International Securities Exchange (ISE), the world's largest equity options exchange, reported an increase in December trading volume compared to the same year-ago period.

Volume Statistics

  • ISE traded 32.3 million equity options contracts, up 30% from 24.9 million equity options contracts in the same year-ago period. In December, average daily volume (ADV) in equity options was 1,468,863 contracts, up 30% from an ADV of 1,131,398 equity options contracts in the same year-ago period.

  • Overall, in its listings, ISE traded more volume in 510 of its 697 issues than any other options exchange.

  • ISE executed more customer volume in its own listings than any other exchange in December.

  • ISE's equity options market share was 33.6% in December, an 11% increase compared to 30.4% for the same year-ago period.

Monthly Highlights

  • ISE was the lead market in December for options on 22 of the 30 stocks in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which represented 75% of the index's total weighting. ISE was the lead market for options on 257 of the stocks in the Standard & Poor's 500 Index, which represented 69% of the index's total weighting. ISE was the lead market for options on 332 of the 1000 stocks in the Russell 1000 Index, which represented 64% of the index's total weighting.

  • ISE traded its 800 millionth contract on December 1, 2004.

  • For the fifth month in 2004, ISE traded more options than any other exchange. In December, ISE was the largest US options exchange based on equity and index options trading.
