IntercontinentalExchange (NYSE: ICE), a leading operator of regulated global futures exchanges, clearing houses and over-the-counter (OTC) markets, today reported solid futures volume growth in October 2010. Average daily volume (ADV) across ICE's futures exchanges was 1,325,817 contracts, up 23% from October 2009.
Year-to-date through October 31, 2010, ADV across ICE's futures exchanges was 1,319,886 contracts, an increase of 27% from the first ten months of 2009. Total futures volume in October 2010 was 27.8 million contracts.
October 2010 Review
- ICE Futures Europe records achieved in October:
- The exchange set an open interest record of 3,690,273 contracts on October 8.
- The ICE Gasoil futures contract established a daily volume record of 371,831 contracts on October 20.
- The Newcastle Coal futures contract set monthly volume and ADV records, and open interest records were established in ECX EUA futures, Richards Bay coal futures and WTI options.
- ICE Futures Canada records achieved in October:
- ICE Futures Canada reported a monthly ADV record of 25,622 contracts and an open interest record of 223,465 contracts on October 20.
- ICE Clear Europe was named Best OTC Clearing House by Financial News at the 8th Annual Awards for Excellence in Trading and Technology, Europe 2010.
- On October 11, ICE announced the introduction of 35 new energy and emissions contracts.
- On October 20, ICE announced the launch of two German natural gas futures on ICE Futures Europe, pending regulatory approval.
- Through October 29, ICE's CDS clearing houses have cleared $13.1 trillion in gross notional value on a cumulative basis across 339,729 transactions. ICE currently lists 258 CDS contracts for clearing.
- ICE Trust U.S. (ICE Trust) has cleared $7.9 trillion of gross notional value since inception, including $521 billion in single-name CDS, resulting in open interest of $538 billion. ICE Trust offers clearing for 38 indexes and 89 single-name instruments.
- ICE Clear Europe has cleared euro 3.8 trillion ($5.2 trillion) of gross notional value since inception, including euro 592 billion ($780 billion) in single-name CDS, resulting in euro 451 billion ($628 billion) of open interest. ICE Clear Europe offers clearing for 30 indexes and 101 single-name instruments.
