The Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) hosted a heart-warming gathering with public and private sector leaders today to celebrate its 35th anniversary as the guardian of Hong Kong’s capital markets.
More than 300 esteemed guests gathered for today’s cocktail reception. Chief Executive Mr John KC Lee and Financial Secretary Mr Paul Chan as well as dignitaries from the Central People’s Government were among the officiating guests for the occasion. Other distinguished guests included senior government officials, members of the Executive Council and the Legislative Council, and senior financial executives.
The jubilant evening at the JW Marriott Hotel Hong Kong was filled with engaging and memorable moments, including keynote speeches by Mr Lee and Mr Chan, a specially-choreographed dance that visualised the SFC’s 35-year journey, as well as an inspiring sharing session by the SFC’s seven past and present chairmen. The guests also commemorated the 75th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China at the event.
In his opening remarks, Mr Tim Lui, Chairman of the SFC, said, “The SFC’s rewarding journey in steering Hong Kong’s capital markets has paralleled China’s historic rise and also Hong Kong’s remarkable ascent as a global financial hub. The SFC is proud to have gone on this journey together and played a part in their stories of capital market success.”
One of the highlights of the evening was a fireside chat among the SFC’s seven chairmen from its establishment in 1989 to the present, who shared their personal memories, values and experience in building SFC into the guardian of capital markets and investors. Six former chairmen, namely Mr Robert Owen, Mr Robert Nottle, Dr Anthony Neoh, Tan Sri Andrew Sheng, Dr Eddy Fong and Mr Carlson Tong, joined incumbent Mr Tim Lui in this sharing.
Ms Julia Leung, Chief Executive Officer of the SFC, moderated the session. “We are grateful for the leadership and guidance of our chairmen and our board of directors, past and present, as well as the close collaboration with our partners in both public and private sectors,” she said. “Supported by a highly dedicated and professional team, the SFC has stood the test of time in cementing Hong Kong’s undisputed status as an international financial centre.”
