Historic Visit By Mrs. Laura Bush, First Lady Of The United States Of America - Rings Closing Bell To Advance Literacy Initiative

The NYSE Group, Inc. (NYSE:  NYX) today welcomed First Lady Laura Bush to the New York Stock Exchange, marking the first time that a sitting First Lady visited the Exchange and participated in a Closing Bell ceremony.

“We are honored to welcome America ’s First Lady to the New York Stock Exchange,” said NYSE Group, Inc. CEO John A. Thain.  “Mrs. Bush has been a strong supporter of free enterprise through her literacy campaign and her efforts to highlight the economic contributions and the role of women as entrepreneurs.” 

Mrs. Bush is highlighting literacy’s role in extending the benefits of free enterprise through Literacy for Economic Self-Sufficiency, ensuring that adults - especially women - learn basic business skills that generate income, foster independence, and boost local economies.

To symbolize the importance of literacy and the vital contribution that women bring to our growing economy, Mrs. Bush and several women entrepreneurs from around the world joined Mr. Thain, and President and Co-Chief Operating Officer, Catherine R. Kinney, for The Closing Bell.
