HEX: Slightly Lower Trading Volumes Compared To Previous Year

Share prices picked up during last quarter

Yesterday, 27 December, the accumulated share turnover for 2001 reached 202 billion euros (2000 total: EUR 227 bn) which was 11 per cent less than in the previous year. The number of shares traded increased by 79.2 per cent and was 11 billion. On 27 December, the total market capitalization of listed companies was 213 billion euros (2000: EUR 318 bn).

Covered warrants proved popular in 2001. Altogether 112 warrants were issued. By the close of 27 December warrant turnover amounted to 118 million euros. A total of 513 million warrants were traded. Trading with covered warrants began in December 2000.

On 27 December, the HEX All-share index closed at 8,641.20 (2000: 13,033.7), the Portfolio index at 2,952.77 and the HEX25 at 1,578.65. Measured by the HEX All-share index, share prices lost 33.7 per cent. Measured by the balanced Portfolio index, share prices lost 23.1 per cent.

During the last quarter, share prices picked up; the All-share index gained some 43 per cent. HEX All-share index reached its year high on 5 January at 12,871.88 points, and was at its lowest on 11 September, at 5,583.57 points.

Today, on the last trading day of 2001, trading was slow and by 14:00 the accummulated share turnover for the day was some 110 million euros. HEX All-share index was up by 1.5 per cent at 8,776.37 points and the Portfolio index by 0.7 per cent at 2,972.69 points.

Members

Eight new remote members started trading at Helsinki Exchanges during the year 2001. At yearend, HEX had altogether 38 members 20 of whom were remote members trading from abroad. In December 2001, the remote membersĀ“ market share was 39 per cent.

New Listings in 2001

Helsinki Exchanges attracted altogether ten listings this year, of which nine were new companies. Seven companies were listed on the Main List, one on the NM List and one on the Prelist.

At yearend, a total of 155 companies and 175 series of shares were traded on Helsinki Exchanges. Of the listed companies, 109 are on the Main List, 30 on the I-List, 16 on the NM-List and one on the Prelist.
