HEX Introduces A New Investment Product To The Finnish Markets, The Index Shares.

An index share (ETF, Exchange Traded Fund) is a listed unit of an index fund. The index shares combine the benefits of indexing - effective diversification - and share trading - real time market value and availability of efficient trading. Investors can buy and sell the shares included in the index in a single transaction.

The index share based on the HEX25-index is the first apparent index share to be listed at HEX. HEX25-index (former FOX-index) comprises of 25 most traded shares listed at Helsinki Exchanges and it is also an underlying index for derivative instruments.

Features of HEX25 index share are:

  • a share basket of 25 shares in a single transaction ("Finnish portfolio")
  • transparency of the portfolio - no surprises
  • real time market value of the investment
  • continuous trading possibility
  • ownership registered to the book-entry account

- The ETF markets are growing intensively globally. ETFs complement the selection of the available financial instruments and thus enhance the operation of our markets. The investment opportunities of the investors will be greatly improved.

Commencement of the trading in index shares requires completion of the technical readiness of the market infrastructure and approval by authorities for the amended rules of HEX. HEX aims to commence trading in the index shares at the beginning of year 2002.

The index share market at Helsinki Exchanges enables all issuers of index shares to list index shares based on both domestic and foreign indices. Seligson & Co Rahastoyhtiö Oyj was chosen to manage the index share on the HEX25 index based on the offers by the members of the Finnish Association of Mutual Funds.
