Helsinki Exchanges: Trading Volumes Doubled Again In 2000

At the close of 29 December, the accumulated share turnover this year reached 227 billion euros (1999: 104 bn). The increase from previous year was 118 per cent, previous year's turnover was passed already on 2 June. The total market capitalization of Helsinki Exchanges was at the end of the year 315.5 billion euros (1999: 346 bn).

Share trading

The busiest month in share trading was March, 23.9 billion euros. The slowest month was August when the turnover reached 13.4 billion euros. The average daily turnover was 904 billion euros (1999: 417.5 bn).

Trading was busiest on the Main List at 225 billion euros (1999: 102.5 bn). On the I-list turnover was 732 million euros (1999: 0.4 mn). Share turnover on the NM-list was 1.1 billion euros (1999:178 mn).

Indices

On 29 December, the HEX All-share Index closed at 13 033.7 (1999: 14 578.68) which was 10,6 per cent lower than on previous yearend. Measured by the balanced Portfolio Index, share prices lost 25.2 per cent. HEX All-share Index and Portfolioindex reached their year high on 2 May at respectively 18 331.02 and 5 643.76 points. The indices were at their lowest on 18 October, at 10 505.95 and 3 524.22 points respectively.

The weight of Nokia Corporation in the All-share index was 71.6 per cent on 29 December (1999: 59.8 %). In the Portfolio index the weight of any one company is limited to 10 per cent.

The co-operation between Helsinki Exchanges and Eurex was proven successful. Eurex became the leading market place for options on Nokia and the average daily turnover multiplied during the year.

The total turnover of Finnish equity and index derivatives at HEX and Eurex was, by 28.12.2000, 6 385 614 contracts as compared to 1 981 368 contracts in the previous year.

FOX, the reference index for equity derivatives, closed at 2321.5 on 29 December which means a 27.9 per cent loss over the closing figure of 3219.82 on 30.12.1999. The year high closing of FOX was 3502.23 on 6 March which is also the all-time high for FOX.

Several new companies

Helsinki Exchanges has attracted altogether 23 listings this year, of which 20 were new companies. The number of new listings was higher only last year. The NM-list attracted most of the new entrants, 10 in all. 8 new companies were accepted on the Main list. At yearend a total of 158 companies and 179 series of shares are traded on Helsinki Exchanges. Of the companies, 108 are on the Main List, 32 on the I-List, 17 on the NM-List and 2 on the Prelist.

Most traded companies

The most traded company on the Helsinki Exchanges is Nokia with 66.4 per cent of the total turnover (Data until 28.12.2000).

The companies used capital arrangements to collect more than 648 million euros from the markets. More than 180 different issues and other capital arrangements were handled in 2000. A total of 5597 billion euros was paid in dividends. The book-entry system included 98 companies about 40 of which were incorporated in the system in 2000. The number of shareholders was app. 847 000. In 2000, altogether 3,9 million transactions and account transfers were handled through the share clearing system.

Number of Remote Members up

At the moment, there are 31 members of Helsinki Exchanges, of which 12 are remote members. Ten new remote members were approved in 2000. Eight new members started trading during the year, of which 6 are remote members.
