The share price performances of Hellenic Exchanges SA and Bolsas y Mercados Espanoles experienced significant growth in July’s FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index, despite the ongoing sovereign debt crisis.
Hellenic Exchanges SA, Greece, the strongest performer on the Index, saw an increase of 35.6 per cent in July 2010, showing the first signs of recovery since January 2010. Spain’s Bolsas y Mercados Espanoles saw growth of 17.6 per cent.
The FTSE Mondo Visione Exchanges Index experienced a solid performance from all European-based exchanges. The London Stock Exchange and Deutsche Boerse saw growth of 20.2 per cent and 14.1 per cent respectively.
Commenting on the Index which closed at 21,639.98 on the 30 July 2010, Herbie Skeete, Managing Director, Mondo Visione and also Co-founder of the Index said:
"Hellenic Exchanges revenue from cash market clearing fell in the three months to end June by 25 per cent, from trading in the cash market by 24 per cent, while listed companies revenue was down 37 per cent. Revenue from derivatives market trading and clearing, however, increased by 18 per cent over the year. Hellenic’s performance has to be viewed against the Greek market which is still only a third recovered from its pre-crisis levels.
The London Stock Exchange had a good month. It has won market share for UK cash equities trading for the first quarter since the onset of MiFID in 2007. Whether the LSE can hang on to these gains remains to be seen."
