Grand Finale Winners Of The Bursa Malaysia Young Investors National Quiz Competition 2021

Bursa Malaysia Berhad (“Bursa Malaysia” or the “Exchange”), today announced the five winners of its inaugural Bursa Young Investors National Quiz Competition 2021. This nationwide virtual quiz competition was organised with the objective to advance and challenge young investors’ investment literacy in Malaysia and is part of Bursa Malaysia’s commitment to engage, educate and empower a new generation of informed investors. This initiative is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4, which focuses on ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all.  


The quiz Grand Finale was held this morning, and it featured ten finalists who had all aced the Preliminary and Semi-Final rounds on September 8 and 22, 2021, respectively. Following a grueling competition, Low Wee Ming from Tunku Abdul Rahman University College was crowned Champion. He took home the grand prize of RM6,000, sponsored by Malaysian Industrial Development Finance Berhad (MIDF). Closely trailing behind were the 1st Runner-Up, Koh Kai Xiang from Tunku Abdul Rahman University College and 2nd Runner-Up, Chew Qian Ru from Sunway College, both of whom bagged RM4,000 sponsored by M+ Online and RM2,000 sponsored by AmInvestment Bank, respectively. Tan Yong Jia from Tunku Abdul Rahman University College and Cheong Yan Ni from Universiti Sains Malaysia at 4th and 5th positions, won RM1,000 and RM500, respectively sponsored by Public Investment Bank. 

The sponsoring brokers, with whom the winners are required to open a trading account, will deposit the cash prizes into the winners' accounts. This is to encourage and enable these young winners to get a head start on investing. 

“As the future generation of Malaysian investors, it is critical that our youth be equipped with as much knowledge on the fundamental and technical aspects of investing so that they can make more informed decisions in the future,” said Datuk Muhamad Umar Swift, Chief Executive Officer of Bursa Malaysia. “Investor education initiatives like today's Bursa Young Investors National Quiz Competition will help provide the right know-how tools and cultivate responsible and sustainable investing habits among them from the start.” 

“Congratulations to the winners. MIDF is excited to be part of this competition, which encourages our young people to learn more about and participate in capital markets. We strongly believe that this is the best age to start investing. To this end, we have designed our online investment app, MIDF Invest, so that even beginners will find it easy to buy and sell shares and ETFs,” said MIDF Group Managing Director, Dato’ Charon Wardini Mokhzani.  

The Bursa Young Investors National Quiz Competition 2021 was opened to Malaysian youths aged 18 to 22 years old. It was held over the course of one month, from 8 September to 6 October, in three rounds: preliminary, semi-final, and grand finale. It drew an overwhelming response from over 1,000 participants, far exceeding the initial target of 500. 

“We are proud to work with Bursa Malaysia in this competition as encouraging the younger generation to start investing early sets the foundation and experience for their needs in future. Gamification approach to investing using technical analysis and screening tools to sharpen young investors skill in the stock market is what we believe in. We look forward to being part of such similar initiatives in future,” said M+ Online Executive Director of Dealing, Fok Chuan Meng.  

The scope of topics covered related to the Exchange's three markets, namely the Securities, Derivatives, and Islamic Equities markets. They included, among others, market dynamics, trading information, product knowledge, and investment strategies. 

 

 

Bursa Malaysia aims to inspire young investors to begin learning about investing and entering the market in an informed manner through this nationwide competition, which will be held annually.
