GlobalData Announces Top M&A Financial And Legal Advisers In Financial Services Sector In 2024

GlobalData has announced the latest Financial and Legal Adviser League Tables, which rank advisers by the total value and volume of merger and acquisition (M&A) deals they advised on in the financial services sector during 2024. See the rankings and findings below.

Morgan Stanley and Stifel/KBW top M&A financial advisers in financial services sector in 2024

Morgan Stanley and Stifel/KBW were the top mergers and acquisitions (M&A) financial advisers in the financial services sector during 2024 by value and volume, respectively, according to the latest financial advisers league table by GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

An analysis of GlobalData’s Deals Database has revealed that Morgan Stanley achieved the leading position in terms of value by advising on $96 billion worth of deals. Meanwhile, Stifel/KBW led in terms of volume by advising on a total of 37 deals.

Aurojyoti Bose, Lead Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “Morgan Stanley saw a remarkable seven-fold increase in the total value of deals it advised on in 2024, compared to the previous year due to the involvement in big-ticket deals. Resultantly, its ranking by value took a leap from ninth position to the top position. During 2024, the US-based firm advised on nine billion-dollar deals* that also included three mega deals valued more than $10 billion.

“Similarly, Stifel/KBW registered improvement in the total number of deals advised by it during 2024 compared to 2023. Its ranking by volume improved from sixth position in 2023 to the top spot in 2024.”

Goldman Sachs occupied the second position in terms of value, by advising on $75.8 billion worth of deals, followed by JP Morgan with $68.8 billion, Barclays with $66.3 billion and Royal Bank of Canada with $52.4 billion.

Meanwhile, Goldman Sachs occupied the second position in terms of volume with 32 deals, followed by JP Morgan with 29 deals, UBS with 29 deals and Evercore with 28 deals.

Legal Advisers

Kirkland & Ellis top M&A legal adviser in financial services sector in 2024

Kirkland & Ellis was the top mergers and acquisitions (M&A) legal adviser in the financial services sector during 2024 by both value and volume, according to the latest legal advisers league table by GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

An analysis of GlobalData’s Deals Database has revealed that Kirkland & Ellis achieved the leading position by advising on 73 deals worth $66.9 billion.

Aurojyoti Bose, Lead Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “Kirkland & Ellis was the top adviser by volume in 2023. Not only did it retain the leadership position by this metric in 2024 but also outpaced its peers by a significant margin.

“Meanwhile, its ranking by value improved from eighth position in 2023 to the top position in 2024 as it registered more than four-fold jump in the total value of deals advised by it. During 2024, Kirkland & Ellis advised on 14 billion-dollar deals* that also included two mega deals valued more than $10 billion. The involvement in these big-ticket deals helped the Chicago-based law firm register massive jump in terms of value as well as improvement in its ranking by this metric.”

Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz occupied the second position in terms of value, by advising on $56 billion worth of deals, followed by Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom with $53.7 billion, Cravath Swaine & Moore with $44.5 billion and Sullivan & Cromwell with $40.9 billion.

Meanwhile, Alston & Bird occupied the second position in terms of volume with 33 deals, followed by Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom with 29 deals, White & Case with 26 deals and Allen & Overy with 22 deals.
