Gina M. Ratto Appointed CalPERS Deputy General Counsel

The California Public Employees' Retirement System has appointed Gina M. Ratto as Deputy General Counsel. She will manage the CalPERS Legal Office and report to General Counsel Peter H. Mixon.

Ratto joined the CalPERS legal staff in December 2004. She has served as Assistant Chief Counsel, Investments, since March 2005.

"Gina Ratto brings a wealth of legal talent and management experience to this position," Mixon said. "We are very pleased that she has accepted this appointment."

Prior to joining CalPERS, Ratto was a Deputy Attorney General in the Government Law Section of the California Attorney General's Office. Previously, she served as Senior Staff Counsel with the State Treasurer's Office.

Before joining state service, Ratto was an Assistant Corporate Counsel for The Money Store/First Union National Bank and an Associate Attorney for the law firm of Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro (now Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman).

Ratto received her law degree, with distinction, from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law. She also received a B.A. degree from the University of the Pacific, with honors.

As Deputy General Counsel, she succeeds Carol A. McConnell, who requested a change of assignment to the Legal Office’s Litigation Team.

The CalPERS Legal Office, comprised of 18 attorneys and 12 support staff, advises the CalPERS Board, executives, and other staff; represents the System in legal matters; coordinates litigation; analyzes and drafts legislation; issues reports; and assists CalPERS on issues and in reviewing documents.
